Why Do We Need God's Salvation?

The concept of salvation is a central theme in the Bible, reflecting humanity's need for redemption and reconciliation with God. Below are seven reasons why salvation is necessary according to the Bible.

1. The Fall of Humanity

The Bible outlines that sin entered the world through the disobedience of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3). This event, often referred to as "the Fall," resulted in a separation between humanity and a holy God.

2. The Nature of Sin

Sin is defined as any thought, word, or action that goes against God's commandments:

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)

Each person, without exception, has sinned, or missed the mark, and has fallen short of God's glorious standard, highlighting the universal need for salvation.

3. Consequences of Sin

The consequences of sin are severe, leading to spiritual death and eternal separation from God: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

Wages are earned and therefore duly deserved; the gift of eternal life is freely offered to all through faith in Jesus Christ. We cannot earn salvation or add to Christ's sacrifice on the cross - He paid the price fully that our sins owed to a holy God. Good works are the outcome of our salvation.

You are saved, not BY good works, but FOR good works. Mark D. Roberts

4. God's Love and Mercy

The Bible emphasizes that God is loving and merciful, desiring that none should perish (2 Peter 3:9). Salvation is a demonstration of God's love, as He provided a way for humanity to be reconciled to Him through the sacrifice of Jesus:

But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God. (Hebrews 10:12)

God promises eternal life to those who believe in his Son, Jesus, Yeshua, the One who gave Himself to save us from eternal destruction:

He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him. (John 3:36)

5. Fulfillment of Prophecy

Throughout the Old Testament, prophecies point towards a Messiah who would save humanity from sin by becoming the sin bearer: But he was wounded for our transgressions;

he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,

and with his stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5).

The New Testament reveals that Jesus has already fulfilled over three hundred prophecies written in the Old Testament (Tanakh). The following ten fulfilled prophecies are for your consideration:

1. The virgin birth – Isaiah 7:14/Matthew 1:22-23

2. A Son will be given - Isaiah 9:6/Mathew 16:16, John 1:14

3. Royal (Davidic) ancestry - Isaiah 11:1, Jeremiah 23:5-6/Matthew 1:1

4. The birth in Bethlehem - Micah 5:2/ Matthew 2:5-6

5. Location and nature of His ministry - Isaiah 9:2, Isaiah 61:1-3/Matt. 4:12-16, Matthew 11:2-6, Luke 4:14-21

6. Enters Jerusalem on a colt - Zechariah 9:9/Matt. 21:4-5

7. Betrayed for 30 pieces of silver - Zechariah 11:12-13/Matt. 27:6-10

8. His death/crucifixion - Isaiah 53, Psalm 22/Matt. 27

9. Buried in a rich man’s tomb - Isaiah 53:9/Matt. 27:57-61

10. Resurrection - depicted in Jonah 1:17 - 2/Matt. 12:38-40

6. Restoration of Relationship

Salvation is not just about escaping punishment; it is about restoring the broken relationship between God and humanity. Through God's saving grace, believers are adopted into His family and can enjoy fellowship with Him: For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:15)

The Lord Jesus longs to have sweet fellowship with us through the Holy Spirit. Spending time with Him in prayer and reading His word enables us to deepen our knowledge and experience of the Godhead.

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me." (Revelation 3:20)

7. Empowerment for Righteous Living

Salvation also equips believers with the Holy Spirit, enabling them to live according to God's will (Galatians 5:22-23). This transformation is essential for living a life that reflects God's character: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

The Bible presents salvation as a critical need due to the reality of sin, the consequences it brings, and God's desire for humanity to be reconciled to Him. Through faith in Jesus Christ and repentance of our sins, we can receive forgiveness, eternal life, and a restored relationship with God. He will never cast out the one who truly seeks Him.
