Hannah from N. Ireland

How long have you been in Cyprus?

I have been in Cyprus for a year, since August last year.

Why Cyprus?

I was teaching in England and had applied for some full-time posts. When that door did not open up, I decided to look about teaching abroad. My granny was reading the Believer's magazine and noticed a post for Logos School, and I thought why not! I got a job as the grade 4 teacher at Logos School.

Tell me a bit about Logos School of English Education:

Logos is a Christian school in Limassol and has students from all backgrounds with an age range of 3-18. It is a Bible teaching school and we have an amazing opportunity to teach God’s word during lessons and share our faith with the kids regularly in both class and assembly. We follow the English National Curriculum and the staff are from all over the world.

What are the challenges?

I would say one of the main challenges for me personally has been children who have no understanding of English. I had limited experience with this in England and found it difficult to adapt at the start.

How do you approach them?

I used flash cards and spoke slowly (hard in a Northern Irish accent!!) to ensure they understood. Eventually I got used to it and now I don’t even think twice about it.

What do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time I love to go out and explore the island, it is just incredible! I also attend a Woman’s Bible Study on a Thursday afternoon.

What are your favourite places in Cyprus?

I love getting up into the mountains! Troodos is incredible and the views are stunning. I also love to get down to the beach and I think Dassoudi is my favourite place. We have also been to Ayia Napa several times. The water there is AMAZING and nothing like I’d seen before.

Any favourite Cypriot food?

I do quite like Kebab, chicken or lamb!

You mentioned that you attend a Bible study: how important is your faith to you?

Yes, the Bible study is great to meet other ladies from different churches. I have really enjoyed the studies, being able to share my thoughts and learn from other believers. I became a Christian at the age of 5, when I understood I needed a Saviour and I put my faith and trust in Him. However it was not until I was 16 that I decided to truly take a stand for God. Meeting with other believers has allowed me to stay strong in my faith as we encourage and uplift each other.

Favourite Bible verse?

I have a few! Isaiah 43:2, Nehemiah 8:10 and Hebrews 13:5&6.

Cats or dogs?

Hmm, my dad is a farmer, so we’ve always had both, but I’d say dog!

Tea or coffee?

Coffee! Most definitely coffee!

Beach or mountains?

Love both, but I’d say beach!

Greek music or Irish?

Irish! I have not heard a lot of Greek music really.

Thank you, Hannah. Enjoy your stay in Cyprus!
